I started listening to SiriusXM U a couple of months ago – I think it’s important to keep in touch with what’s happening in college radio (which is different than mainstream Alternative). I was immediately struck by the gratuitous use of reverb, the likes of which I hadn’t heard in decades, if at all. Reverb and vast washes of sound. I learned that at least one of the sub-genres I was beginning to enjoy is called Chillwave. Neon Indian, M83 … I’m sure there are tons more I’m not aware of or can’t name off the top of my head. The music seems to have been realized through hazy, saturated filters.

Kinda like the current popularity of washed-out, blurred-edge photos that are all the rage for social sharing. I’m talking about Instagram, Hipstamatic, and the kinds of photos that pepper Tumblr blogs everywhere. I think there’s a parallel between these hipster trends in photography and music, but I’m not going to begin to try and explain why it’s happening – how about you?
